Important facts

1. Jorhat has been declared Assam’s first smoke-free district. In Jorhat, almost 90% offices now have a tobacco-free environment in compliance with Section 4 (Prohibition of smoking in public places) of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003.

2. India pledged Nepal to grant assistance of 44.12 million rupees for the construction of Nepal Academy’s library building in Kathmandu. Nepal Academy, established in 1957, is a premier national institution devoted to the promotion of language, literature, culture, philosophy and research activities.

3. World’s oldest flamingo known as Greater died at the age of 83 on 30 January 2014 at Adelaide Zoo of Australia. Greater was brought to the zoo in 1933.


4. Michael Rogers has been nominated as the Director of National Security Agency (NSA) by the US president Barack Obama. His name was announced by Defence Secretary of US. Defence Secretary also announced the name of Rick Ledgett as the new Deputy Director of NSA who is at present its Chief Operating Officer.


5. US warned China against any move to declare a new Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the South China Sea. This came after the reports of Japanese media that says that China is preparing to announce another defence zone in the area, which are driven by territorial disputes with the neighbouring countries.


6. Austrian actor Maximillan Schell, who won the best actor Oscar in the early 1960s for his portrayal of a defence attorney in the drana ‘Judgement at Nuremberg‘, has died.


7. Luis Aragones, the coach of Spain‘s 2008 European Championship-winner side, died at the age of 75.


8. Praveen Rana won the gold medal in 74-kg category as India‘s freestyle wrestlers finished third in team standings in the 2014 Dave Schultz international wrestling tournament in Colarado Springs, USA.


9. Manchester city and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure has been named the Confederation of African Football (CAF) footballer of the year. It is a third straight title for Toure, who also won December’s BBC African Footballer of the Year Award.


10. New Chairman & Managing Director of Punjab & Sind Bank is Jatinder Bir Singh. Earlier he acted as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Water Resources.


11. New Executive Director of Dena Bank is RK Takkar. Earlier he acted as GM at Oriental Bank of Commerce.


12. Ghulam Nabi Azad inaugurated Mother and Child Tracking Facilitation Centre. Aim of this centre is to support pregnant women and newborn baby with healthcare records, immunisation & vaccination of the baby.


13. 28th Surajkund International Crafts Mela Started at Surajkund. This will be held between 1st February 2014 to 15th February 2014. Theme state of this mela is Goa. To show crafts and ethnic art in this mela, not only Indian and states craftsperson’s come to this place but also SAARC Nations come to participate in this mela.


14. 7th Ranji Trophy won by Karnataka by defeating Maharashtra by 7 Wickets. Man of the Match Award achieved by Rahul, Young Opener. He got this title for his century in the first innings. Karnataka team achieved Rs.2crores while Maharashtra Team achieved Rs.1 crore.


15. India Plans for NASA Air craft for Cyclone Prediction. In the last year, eastern coast was affected by cyclone for 5 times. To study wind patterns at high altitude for better prediction of such calamities, India is planning to Procure NASA aircraft equipped with a lab. Shailesh Nayak, Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary stated that they were procuring McDonnell Douglas DC – 8 aircraft from NASA. This would happen between 2015-16.


16. 14th Annual Greentech Environment 2013 Award achieved by NMPT. It has attained this award for environment management. Greentech Foundation has presented this award to NMPT.


17. International Report on money laundering and Terrorist Financing Released. Name of this report is Financial Action Task Force (FATF).


18. New Method to covert harmful greenhouse gases into Chemicals discovered by the scientists. This process will produce synthetic fuels. Highly selective catalyst capable of electrochemically converting carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide with 92 % Efficiency, developed by team of researchers at the University of Delaware.


19. Prestigious Gold Standard Foundation (GSF) Certification awarded to Delhi Metro. It had achieved this award for efficient using of energy. In the world, Delhi Metro became the first ever Railway system with GSF certification standard. This certification is globally accepted certification standard for carbon mitigation projects.


20. In the year 2013, tea production increased by 6.5 % as per the report released by Indian Tea Association (ITA). Production of tea in 2012 is 1126 million kilograms and production in 2013 is 1200 million kilograms.
